Last month, the Mayors Innovation Project <[link removed]> celebrated 20 years with a dynamic Winter Meeting in Washington, DC, bringing together over 100 local leaders to tackle today’s most pressing challenges. Panels explored advancing local wealth and opportunity, building inclusive communities, strengthening flood-resilient infrastructure, and fostering effective mayor-council partnerships. Highlights included a keynote from Brookings Metro’s Xavier de Souza Briggs, a Women Mayors Network <[link removed]> reception, and a conversation with former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

We’ve already released recaps on Leadership and Policy for Welcoming and Inclusive Communities <[link removed]> and Data, Financing, and Leadership Solutions for Flood Resilient Infrastructure <[link removed]>. Today, we’re excited to release our latest recap on Advancing Local Wealth and Opportunity.

Congestion pricing could be the only path to managing gridlock <[link removed]>
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each year, U.S. transportation agencies spend billions expanding highways to reduce congestion. Yet, over the past 50 years, commute times have risen by 20%, and traffic congestion continues to worsen. New research suggests that congestion pricing may be the most effective solution. New York’s recently launched program, despite controversy, offers a promising example. Check out our latest blog for a deeper dive into the issue.

Policy Solutions for Justice, Safety, and Community Well-Being <[link removed]>

Across the country, cities are grappling with how to keep their communities safe amidst weak firearm regulations, the opioid crisis, and national housing and homelessness crises. At the same time, racial inequities in the U.S. criminal justice system persist, with data showing U.S. police are hired less selectively and use lethal force more often than in other OECD countries. This month's roadmap offers strategies for community-driven reform, from investing in youth interventions to decriminalizing non-violent offenses and reducing racial disparities.
