celebrated 20 years with a dynamic Winter Meeting in Washington, DC, bringing together over 100 local leaders to tackle today’s most pressing challenges. Panels explored advancing local wealth and opportunity, building inclusive communities, strengthening flood-resilient infrastructure, and fostering effective mayor-council partnerships. Highlights included a keynote from Brookings Metro’s Xavier de Souza Briggs, a Women Mayors Network
reception, and a conversation with former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Each year, U.S. transportation agencies spend billions expanding highways to reduce congestion. Yet, over the past 50 years, commute times have risen by 20%, and traffic congestion continues to worsen. New research suggests that congestion pricing may be the most effective solution. At the same time, racial inequities in the U.S. criminal justice system persist, with data showing U.S. police are hired less selectively and use lethal force more often than in other OECD countries. This month's roadmap offers strategies for community-driven reform, from investing in youth interventions to decriminalizing non-violent offenses and reducing racial disparities.
