Dear: Reader

InSight Crime is proud to announce the 10th annual edition of our Homicide Round-Up ([link removed]) . A decade in, we are covering more countries than ever before with increased detail and transparency about the data’s quality and reliability.

** In summary
------------------------------------------------------------

The Caribbean saw the largest spikes in violence, with every nation but Jamaica ([link removed]) and the Dominican Republic ([link removed]) seeing increases in their homicide rates. Turks and Caicos ([link removed]) had the highest murder rate of any country in our Round-Up, while the continued instability in Haiti ([link removed]) led to even more killings in 2024. Violence in many of these countries is strongly tied to geography as local gangs fight over cocaine passing through these islands to the United States, with guns and ammunition flowing in the opposite direction.

Venezuela ([link removed]) experienced a slight decrease in homicides as President Nicolás Maduro built criminal alliances to secure power, and other gangs have migrated to neighboring South American nations.

Mexico ([link removed]) , Colombia ([link removed]) , and Brazil ([link removed]) – three of the countries that have most been plagued by organized crime over the years – all saw a drop in homicides. Shaky truces and mounting rivalries, however, raise questions as to whether these countries have found pathways to peace, or are experiencing a fragile calmbefore a new storm of criminal violence arrives.

To produce this special content, our team dedicated several months to collecting, processing and analyzing data, which we combined with insights from our field work.

Sincerely,

The InSight Crime team
