Venezuela experienced a slight decrease in homicides as President Nicolás Maduro built criminal alliances to secure power, and other gangs have migrated to neighboring South American nations.
Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil – three of the countries that have most been plagued by organized crime over the years – all saw a drop in homicides. Shaky truces and mounting rivalries, however, raise questions as to whether these countries have found pathways to peace, or are experiencing a fragile calmbefore a new storm of criminal violence arrives.
