For 250 years, Black women were enslaved in white households. Following emancipation, Black domestic workers worked for another 100 years without basic labor rights. Today, they often lack essential protections.

This wasn't accidental—it was policy.

When labor protections were finally won, domestic workers—overwhelmingly Black women—were intentionally excluded. Lawmakers deliberately denied Black workers the same rights afforded others, aiming to keep their labor cheap and exploitable.

While laws have changed, this systemic exclusion continues today. Too many Black domestic workers are still denied paid sick leave, experience wage theft, and are undervalued.

But we're fighting back.
