John, earlier this month Mary Gay reintroduced her bill to bring transparency to Presidential Inaugural fundraising — The Inaugural Fund Integrity Act.

I don’t need to explain why this is needed right now. Trump’s inaugural committee raised more than $200 million, more than any inaugural fund raised by every other President. That is deeply concerning, particularly considering the limited scale of this year’s inauguration due to the weather.

FYI — Mary Gay has introduced this bill in every single Congress since she was sworn into the 115th Congress. Transparency is important no matter the party that is taking power. Here’s why…

While federal campaign committees have specific rules about donors, contribution limits, and reporting requirements — all with the aim of preventing corruption and undue domestic and foreign influence — inaugural funds do not. The Inaugural Fund Integrity Act will close several loopholes in the current inaugural fund regulations that permit the abuse of funds by: * Requiring full and rapid disclosure of contributions that aggregate over $1,000
* Establishing a contribution limit of $50,000
* Completely banning "straw man” donations
* Prohibiting donations from foreign nationals
* Requiring full disclosure of expenditures
* Banning corporate and Super-PAC contributions

Here on Team Scanlon, we’re all supporting Mary Gay in fighting to pass this legislation and hold our Presidents accountable for who and what is funding their arrival into power. Instantly add your name to let us know you agree there should be more transparency on where inauguration money comes from. [[link removed]]

Politico boosted Mary Gay on the growing need for transparency when it comes to Inaugural funding noting that there is no upper limit on contributions and no restriction on donations from dark money groups, government contractors, corporations currently under federal investigation, or individuals seeking roles in the new administration. “Inauguration fundraising is an opportunity, no matter who’s in office, for deep-pocketed donors to buy influence with whoever’s president. In some ways, it’s even more corrosive than ordinary campaign donations, because you already know who won, so you are specifically making payments to ingratiate yourself with someone you know is going to be in office — that’s just an opportunity for corruption.”
