Dear friend,
As we close a chapter in our history and open a new and uncertain one, I want to take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary progress that President Biden and Vice President Harris have made for Black Americans and communities across our nation.
Together, they’ve delivered historic wins, including:
* Achieving the lowest Black unemployment rate on record
* Securing $7 billion in funding for HBCUs
* Expanding access to federal contracts for small, Black-owned businesses
And they’ve done something even more profound – acknowledging and addressing historical injustices. Before leaving office, President Biden pardoned several civil rights activists, including Marcus Garvey and Ravi Ragbir.
As the daughter of Jamaican immigrants and a fierce advocate for the diaspora, I’ve long honored the legacy of Marcus Garvey. His wrongful conviction in 1923 was a political weapon aimed at silencing a powerful Black leader and undermining his vision for economic empowerment. President Biden’s decision to grant Garvey a posthumous pardon is deeply meaningful – not just to Jamaicans and Caribbean Americans, but to all who understand the importance of correcting historical wrongs.
Ravi Ragbir’s story is no less important. It is a powerful reminder of the resilience of immigrant communities. After enduring years of uncertainty following his 2001 conviction, Ravi dedicated his life to advocating for justice and human dignity. President Biden’s pardon is not just an act of compassion – it’s an acknowledgment of Ravi’s extraordinary contributions to his community and the fight for immigrant rights.
Now, as we face uncertain times, it’s more important than ever to recognize the power of dedicated public servants. Their legacies of progress will inspire my colleagues and me in the Congressional Black Caucus as we continue to fight for prosperity and equality.
As President Biden and Vice President Harris return to civilian life, I hope you’ll join me in saying a heartfelt thank you. Add your name to my thank-you card today to show your appreciation for their tireless service to our nation! [[link removed]]
