Commissioners to consider community outdoor recreation project grantees

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider recommended community outdoor projects when it meets Jan. 24 in Lincoln.

Commissioners will consider staff recommendations to approve grants for the Land and Water Conservation Fund Stateside Assistance Program and outdoor trail projects for federal funding through the Recreational Trails Program.

Also, test the ice. The minimum thickness to support one person is 4 inches of clear ice; 7.5 inches will support a group weighing up to two tons or an all-terrain vehicle. Use an ice chisel or spud bar to strike the ice and evaluate conditions as you venture out.

Nebraskans, if you're getting an income tax refund this year, you have a great opportunity to support wildlife and habitat conservation.

Look for the peregrine falcon symbol on line 56 of your income tax form, where you can donate $1 or more to the Wildlife Conservation Fund, which helps several hundred species in Nebraska that are rare, endangered or threatened.
