Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) has been elected Speaker of the House — again.

The GOP’s inner dysfunction was on full display yesterday: Johnson narrowly secured another term as House Speaker, barely overcoming infighting within his party. Johnson, who calls himself “MAGA conservative,” has a demonstrated history of anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry and an endorsement from Donald Trump.

Now, he’s leading a Republican-controlled House, and with just weeks until the inauguration, he’s already laying the groundwork for a second Trump administration . Republicans in Congress haven’t been shy about their plans to bow down to Donald Trump, slash taxes for the wealthy, cut critical social programs, and undermine our democacy.

Far-right extremists will soon hold control of all 3 branches of our government, and their backwards agenda poses a serious threat to our values and democracy. We are the last line of defense against MAGA extremism.
