Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) has been elected Speaker of the House — again.
The GOP’s inner dysfunction was on full display yesterday: Johnson narrowly secured another term as House Speaker, barely overcoming infighting within his party. Johnson, who calls himself “MAGA conservative,” has a demonstrated history of anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry and an endorsement from Donald Trump.
Now, he’s leading a Republican-controlled House, and with just weeks until the inauguration, he’s already laying the groundwork for a second Trump administration. Republicans in Congress haven’t been shy about their plans to bow down to Donald Trump, slash taxes for the wealthy, cut critical social programs, and undermine our democacy.
Far-right extremists will soon hold control of all 3 branches of our government, and their backwards agenda poses a serious threat to our values and democracy. We are the last line of defense against MAGA extremism.
