Weekend Reading

Hi John,

Everyone deserves to live in safety and peace, with dignity and the resources they need to thrive. In these difficult times, we’re grateful to join with you in working toward that vision. This week, you can read stories of people working for change in Gaza and at the U.S.-Mexico border—and take action for peace in Sudan.

TAKE ACTION

Tell Congress: Stop arms sales from fueling the war in Sudan! [link removed]

Despite an international arms embargo, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) continues to supply weapons and other support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF—one of the key parties in the war—has committed mass atrocities, and likely genocide, in Darfur. Today, Congress must block U.S. arms sales to the UAE until it stops supporting the RSF. The Senate may vote on this by year’s end, so elected officials need to hear from us today. Tell Congress: Stop arms sales to the UAE and support an end to the war in Sudan! [link removed]

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT

Video: Aiding migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border [link removed]

At the U.S.-Mexico border, Border Patrol holds migrants in open-air detention sites, without access to basic services. For nearly every day for more than a year, AFSC and partners have operated a solidarity aid station, providing migrants with food, water, and first aid. We are also documenting border agents' treatment of migrants as we advocate for an end to this inhumane practice. To see what these efforts look like, watch the short documentary "Atestiguar" by AFSC's Danielle Cosmes.  [link removed]

GAZA

The struggle for food in Gaza [link removed]

Starvation is rampant in Gaza, but aid is at an all-time low as Israel continues to block most humanitarian aid from entering. In this article, four Palestinians describe the challenges they face in accessing food—and how they persevere in the face of unimaginable hardship. Their stories are part of AFSC’s “Displaced in Gaza” series [link removed] , which features testimonies from people who have been repeatedly displaced in their homeland since Oct. 7, 2023. Read more. A Gaza farmer rebuilds from ashes of war [link removed]
By Firas Ramlawi

In Khan Younis—once known as the “vegetable basket” of Gaza—a farmer named Mohammed stands as a symbol of resilience. His crops have been reduced to ash and fields have been scarred by bombing and munitions. Amid the devastation, Mohammed has begun to restore his burnt greenhouses and is planting seeds for a more just, peaceful future for Palestinians in Gaza. Read more. [link removed]
