"They are girls, not mothers" UN Cases Could Change the Future of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) [[link removed]]
The Center for Reproductive Rights and our partners are awaiting a landmark decision from the United Nations Human Rights Committee. These cases, filed on behalf of four young survivors from Ecuador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, demand justice and accountability. Here’s what you need to know:
* The Issue: Four girls, Norma, Fátima, Lucía, and Susana, all under 14 years old, were denied access to abortion and reproductive health care after surviving sexual violence. They were forced to carry unwanted pregnancies.
* The Goal: Establish global standards to protect survivors' rights and ensure access to essential healthcare.
* The Impact: A favorable ruling could: * Strengthen SRHR protections across Latin America and globally
* Set a historic precedent for international human rights law by stopping once and for all forced motherhood
* Address systemic violations and promote justice for survivors

* Why It Matters: Millions in Latin America face restrictive abortion laws that perpetuate inequality, forcing many survivors into unwanted pregnancies.

Center Advocates for Global Reproductive Rights at UN General Assembly [[link removed]]
In September, the Center for Reproductive Rights participated in the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), engaging global leaders on critical sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues.
Here's what we accomplished:
* Provided input on the Pact for the Future, a global framework supporting universal access to SRHR and gender equality
* Met with government and UN officials to address: * Universal health care and SRHR accountability
* The global impacts of U.S. abortion policies
* Strategies to combat anti-rights movements

Catalina Martínez Coral, Senior Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, participated in a UN Women panel, "Toward an Equal, Just, and Secure World," where she discussed the importance of feminist foreign policy, accountability for SRHR violations, and advancing equity in regions affected by restrictive abortion laws.
Our advocacy at UNGA highlights the global urgency to ensure reproductive rights are upheld and prioritized.

Reproductive Health Care: A Nation Divided [[link removed]]
Two and a half years after the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, access to reproductive health care in the U.S. is more unequal than ever.
The Center for Reproductive Rights' 2024 State Legislative Wrap-Up [[link removed]] reviews nearly 2,000 bills introduced across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., uncovering key trends. Anti-abortion lawmakers have intensified efforts to restrict care, even targeting out-of-state abortion seekers and their supporters. Meanwhile, eleven states have enshrined abortion protections in their constitutions, and interstate shield laws are evolving to protect providers and patients.
Voter support for reproductive freedom remains steadfast, with 14 of 17 states approving abortion rights measures since 2022. However, federal threats loom as the 2024 election results could pave the way for a national abortion ban, potentially overriding state protections.

Fighting for Clarity and Care in Idaho's Abortion Laws [[link removed]]
On November 12th, 2024, an Idaho state court began hearing testimony in Adkins v. State of Idaho, the Center for Reproductive Rights’ case challenging the state’s restrictive abortion bans. The court concluded hearing testimony on November 21st, 2024, and a decision is expected in early 2025.
The Center brought this case on behalf of four Idaho women denied abortions, two Idaho physicians, and an organization of Idaho family physicians to challenge the unclear and overly narrow medical exceptions in the state's abortion bans. In challenging the medical exceptions, the Center aims to empower Idaho doctors to provide time-sensitive and health-preserving abortion care to their Idaho patients without delay.

"Instead of grieving the loss of our baby with family and friends, we were forced to scramble and travel to find the care I needed... So we grieved the loss of our daughter alone, and had to leave the medical team that we had grown to love and trust through our previous pregnancy."
—Jennifer Adkins, lead plaintiff in Adkins v. State of Idaho
