Dear Friend,

It’s been just over a year since we said goodbye to Norman Lear, a good
friend and a great human being. And what a year it’s been! I’m exhausted!

I’m almost tempted to say I’m glad Norman isn’t here to see Donald Trump
preparing to take power. But I do wish Norman were here. Because he had a
deep belief in the American dream, and he would know how to speak hope
into our hurting hearts.

Norman had a long view that came from being a fully engaged citizen until
the end of his 101 years. He lived through times of turmoil, violence, and
political backlash. But he never stopped being an optimist, because he saw
how much progress Americans can make when we work together. That’s why he
created People For the American Way.
