Dear Friend, It’s been just over a year since we said goodbye to Norman Lear, a good friend and a great human being. And what a year it’s been! I’m exhausted! I’m almost tempted to say I’m glad Norman isn’t here to see Donald Trump preparing to take power. But I do wish Norman were here. Because he had a deep belief in the American dream, and he would know how to speak hope into our hurting hearts. Norman had a long view that came from being a fully engaged citizen until the end of his 101 years. He lived through times of turmoil, violence, and political backlash. But he never stopped being an optimist, because he saw how much progress Americans can make when we work together. That’s why he created People For the American Way. American democracy is about to face one of its strongest tests—a president who wants to rule like a king and a system of checks and balances that has been weakened by his allies on the Supreme Court. Many Americans are disheartened and frightened. They need to know they are not alone. They need to be inspired—and offered ways to make a difference. People For the American Way is doing both. People For is working with some of the country’s greatest artists to inspire people to be active in defense of our democratic ideals. And it’s equipping activists and elected officials alike to build an effective resistance to the worst of what’s to come. Norman fought fascism in Europe and devoted his life to resisting its rise in our country. He was fond of saying eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. It’s now up to us. With gratitude, Jamie Lee Curtis
