Dear John,

New rules which come into effect TODAY will make it almost impossible for thousands of British businesses to export, reducing choice and increasing costs for UK consumers.

With it becoming more common for legitimate looking websites to sell substandard or even dangerous goods, the EU has introduced the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) to better protect European consumers.

HOWEVER! Because of Brexit, British businesses that sell into the EU will need to follow these enhanced rules. It means that even a sole trader in Swindon selling handmade pottery on Etsy must employ someone in the EU if they want to sell into the single market.

AND THAT’S NOT ALL! Businesses must follow the same rules when sending goods to Northern Ireland. Consumers in NI could see a reduction in choice as more businesses stop selling there altogether.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! Consumers in England, Scotland and Wales may see price increases as SMEs seek to replace lost income from their inability to sell in the EU or Northern Ireland.

Our work with the UK Trade and Business Commission <[link removed]> has put beneficial regulatory alignment on the agenda of the UK Government’s relationship reset with the EU and we will encourage the Government to use the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill to bring Britain back into alignment with the EU.

Organised by Best for Britain, the Commission will reconvene in January to provide original research & evidence-based solutions to problems facing businesses and this is only possible because of your continued support.

Thank you,
