Dear John,
New rules which come into effect
TODAY will
make it almost impossible for thousands of British businesses to
export, reducing choice and increasing costs for UK
consumers.
With it becoming more common for
legitimate looking websites to sell substandard or even dangerous
goods, the EU has introduced the General Product Safety Regulation
(GPSR) to better protect European consumers.
HOWEVER! Because
of Brexit, British businesses that sell into the EU will need to
follow these enhanced rules. It means that even a sole trader in
Swindon selling handmade pottery on Etsy must employ someone in the EU
if they want to sell into the single market.
AND THAT’S NOT ALL! Businesses must follow the same rules when sending goods to
Northern Ireland. Consumers in NI could see a reduction in choice as
more businesses stop selling there altogether.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! Consumers in England, Scotland and Wales may see price increases
as SMEs seek to replace lost income from their inability to sell in
the EU or Northern Ireland.
