*Discover How DEA Enforces Substance
Laws and Regulations*
In carrying out its mission, DEA enforces controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and brings illicit organizations and members to justice. DEA follows the* Controlled Substances Act (CSA) [ [link removed] ] *to uphold federal laws about the regulations behind producing, using, possessing, or importing certain substances.
The CSA places all substances regulated under existing federal law into one of five schedules. The placement is based on medical use, potential for misuse, and safety or dependence liability. Review drug scheduling information to learn more about how illicit substances are classified.
