Discover How DEA Enforces Substance
Laws and Regulations

In carrying out its mission, DEA enforces controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and brings illicit organizations and members to justice. DEA follows the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) to uphold federal laws about the regulations behind producing, using, possessing, or importing certain substances.

The CSA places all substances regulated under existing federal law into one of five schedules. The placement is based on medical use, potential for misuse, and safety or dependence liability. Review drug scheduling information to learn more about how illicit substances are classified.

Drug Facts of the Week

Fentanyl

Illicit fentanyl can be sold as a powder or in fake tablets alone or in combination with other drugs such as heroin or cocaine.

GHB (Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid)

GHB is another name for the generic drug sodium oxybate. GHB is produced illegally in both domestic and foreign clandestine laboratories.

Hallucinogens

Shrooms, LSD, and MDMA are all types of hallucinogens. Hallucinogens are among the oldest known group of drugs used for their ability to alter human perception and mood.

Heroin

One of the most significant effects of heroin use is addiction. With regular heroin use, tolerance to the drug develops.

Hydromorphone

Users can misuse hydromorphone tablets by ingesting them. Injectable solutions, as well as tablets that have been crushed and dissolved in a solution may be injected as a substitute for heroin. 

Inhalants

There are more than 1,000 products that are very dangerous when inhaled. Felt tip markers, spray paint, air freshener, butane, and even cooking spray are considered harmful inhalants. 

K2/Spice

K2/Spice is a non-organic synthetic cannabinoid which is created in illicit laboratories. This substance is often sold as a “legal” alternative to marijuana.
