Dear Friend,

In the newsletter this week...

2. Has Labour returned more immigrants than the Conservatives? (#body2)

But first...
I would like to thank you for sticking with Full Fact during the recent increase in email traffic over the last few weeks.

As a charity, Full Fact maintains our editorial independence by making sure we have a diverse range of funding from individuals, charitable trusts and one-off donations from supportive organisations.

We hit our Big Give fundraising target of £32,000 with seconds to spare, this was underpinned by an average donation from our supporters of about £10, showing how critical small donors are in funding our fact checking work.

The £32,000 was matched by a charitable trust and two major donors for a total of £64,025 (with a £25 donation in the last second!).

Speaking at the launch of the government’s “Plan for Change” last week, the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer claimed that living standards “went down” under the previous government.

It’s not immediately clear which time period or living standards metric Mr Starmer was referring to, and we’ve asked Number 10 for details. But analysis of the latest figures from the IFS and Resolution Foundation shows Real Household Disposable Income—perhaps the most commonly used measure of living standards—has increased since 2010.

At Prime Minister’s Questions last week the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer claimed: “9,400 people who have no right to be here have been returned. That is a 30% increase on the numbers of last year.”

The 9,400 figure seems to refer to the number of enforced and voluntary returns of people with no right to be in the UK between 5 July and 28 October 2024. But we don’t have corresponding data for the same period in 2023, so we can’t say how big an increase this represents.

A picture circulating on social media is claimed to be the first of Syria’s ousted President Bashar al-Assad and his wife in Moscow.

Full Fact has used Google Lens to identify the source of the image, which is a still from a video showing the pair visiting earthquake victims in Aleppo, Syria, in February 2023.
