Help us spread awareness: winter care tips that could save a community cat’s life
Friend,
When temperatures drop, people naturally wonder how they can help cats who live outdoors. The key is to remember that community cats thrive in all kinds of environments—and education is the true way to save cats’ lives.
The education Alley Cat Allies shares worldwide informs people to NOT bring cats to animal shelters without humane programs. At these shelters, cats will be killed. With your support, we can stop the killing by sharing lifesaving educational resources and transforming animal shelters with nonlethal, effective, lifesaving practices and policies for cats.
Community cats need your help now. Will you make an emergency gift today to educate communities, transform policies and programs, and keep cats safe during these winter months and always?
Your gift today helps us continue to educate people on how to truly extend kindness to community cats this winter season and bring humane and effective programs, like Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), to their communities. Everyone can follow these three simple but crucial winter cat care tips:
1) DO NOT bring cats or kittens to animal shelters.
Many shelters lack humane, nonlethal policies and programs. Bringing cats and kittens to shelters—especially community cats, who are unowned, bonded to their outdoor homes and feline families, and generally unadoptable—means they may not come out alive.
2) Provide outdoor shelters plus extra food and water to help cats stay warm.
An outdoor shelter insulated with straw (not hay!) gives community cats a safe place to relax year-round. And, using a heated bowl for cats’ water and wet food will prevent them from freezing. Caregivers can also warm up canned food and water before serving and give cats extra food to help them stay extra warm.
3) Always check under the hood of your car for cats.
Before you turn on your car engine, look under your car to make sure the coast is clear, and check to see that no cats have curled up in your engine during especially cold days. Give the hood a few taps to make sure a cat isn’t hiding there.
Friend, as winter weather takes hold, community cats need us right now. Donate today to help us educate communities to save cats’ lives.
For the cats,
