Everyone can follow these three simple but crucial winter cat care tips: 1) DO NOT bring cats or kittens to animal shelters. Many shelters lack humane, nonlethal policies and programs. Bringing cats and kittens to shelters—especially community cats, who are unowned, bonded to their outdoor homes and feline families, and generally unadoptable—means they may not come out alive. 2) Provide outdoor shelters plus extra food and water to help cats stay warm. An outdoor shelter insulated with straw (not hay!) gives community cats a safe place to relax year-round. And, using a heated bowl for cats’ water and wet food will prevent them from freezing. Caregivers can also warm up canned food and water before serving and give cats extra food to help them stay extra warm. 3) Always check under the hood of your car for cats. Before you turn on your car engine, look under your car to make sure the coast is clear, and check to see that no cats have curled up in your engine during especially cold days.
