Rugby legend returns home for Christmas tomorrow

Rugby League and fundraising legend Kevin Sinfield CBE is coming home tomorrow on the final day of his latest epic fundraising challenge – so let's give him a hero's welcome.

Oldham-born Kevin is running seven regions of the United Kingdom in memory of his friend and former teammate Rob Burrow, who passed away from Motor Neurone Disease in June, in recognition of the shirt number he wore.

He will run the home stretch to Saddleworth from Manchester, starting out at 7.15am from Old Trafford, the place where the pair created so many special memories during their playing days with Leeds Rhinos.

From the Etihad Stadium, Kevin will arrive at Costa Coffee at Albert Street, Hollinwood junction at 10.50pm, then on to Waterhead Rugby Club for 11.51am, arriving at the Old Bell Inn in Delph at 12.51pm and finally The Farrars Arms in Saddleworth at 1.51pm.

Visit new thought-provoking exhibition inspired by the Doomsday Clock

From tomorrow, Saturday 7 December, until Saturday 1 March, visit Gallery Oldham to see an exhibition inspired by the Doomsday Clock.

Developed in 1947 as an indicator showing how close humanity is to self-destruction, it was then set at seven seconds to midnight. The hands are currently set at 90 seconds to midnight.

The exhibition Minute to Midnight features work from five north-west artists exploring the climate crisis, alongside endangered bird species and pressed flowers from the gallery’s collection.

And there will be a talk with the artists on Saturday 25 January at 2pm, discussing ‘What is the role of the Artist at the End of Time?’.

There is no booking required.

Community spaces to benefit from improvements worth more than £80,000

The council has secured funding to refurbish three sites in the borough that are well used and important to residents.

Royton Park, Shaw Memorial Gardens and the Rochdale Canal towpath, between the Tesco Bridge and Ashton Road West (Bridge 79), are all set to be improved.

The work has been paid for after the council secured Section 106 agreements – money developers must pay to the council to reduce the impact of their building work on the local community.

Physical immigration documents are going digital – the deadline is approaching

The UK Government is replacing physical immigration documents on December 31 with digital proof of immigration status called an eVisa.

People in the UK using a physical immigration document, such as a biometric residence permit (BRP), or legacy paper document such as a passport containing an ink stamp or a vignette sticker now need to create a UKVI account to access their eVisa, and it's free and straightforward.

Information and details on how to do this are available on the government website at [www.gov.uk/evisa]([link removed])

If you need support setting up your account contact the government help service, Migrant Help by emailing [email protected] or call 07483 170100.
