John,

URGENT: In a shocking power grab, Republican leaders in the NC General Assembly are using their last few weeks with a Supermajority to strip power from all of the gun violence prevention champions we just voted for, and hand that power to Republicans instead.

Last week, NC Republican leadership hijacked Senate Bill 382 - a Hurricane Helene recovery bill - using it to strip powers from the incoming Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, and Superintendent of Public Instruction. SB 382 instead hands those powers to Republicans, who were NOT elected to hold those powers. This anti-democratic bill also changes election rules in ways that will make it hard to count every vote in future elections. All without providing adequate resources right now that people in Western NC deeply need and have been pleading for.[1]

Governor Cooper has vetoed this power grab. Contact your NC lawmakers today to ask them to sustain the Governor’s veto when they come back to Raleigh TOMORROW, December 2nd.

Tell NC Lawmakers: Stop The Power Grab! [[link removed]]

To be clear: we demand immediate and sustained relief funding for Western North Carolina - but NOT by way of this power grab. As Gov. Cooper said in his veto, this bill is a sham.[2] It’s a blatant disregard by NC Republican leaders of the will of the people, who just elected Democrats to top positions in the state – including many of you, who phone banked and canvassed with us to elect gun violence prevention (GVP) champions Josh Stein for Governor and Mo Green for Superintendent of Public Instruction.

This law will make it harder for GVP champions like the ones we just elected to fight for the safety of our communities. Tell your lawmakers to sustain the SB 382 veto. [[link removed]]

In this fight together,
Becky and Sara
