Hi John,

We know everyone is still reeling from the election results, but it’s critical not to lose sight of where we were successful, and to understand why we won and why these are so important.

Last week three states - Colorado, New York, and Maryland - passed expansive abortion ballot amendments.

Colorado: Voters said “YES” to Prop 79 and enshrined abortion rights in their constitution. Prop 79 will also undo a 1984 law that barred people from using their health insurance to pay for abortion care!

Maryland: Voters said “YES” on Question 1, and added a new article to their constitution, establishing a right to reproductive freedom.

New York: Voters said “YES” to Prop 1 and enshrined abortion rights in their constitution with no viability limits! Prop 1 also bans discrimination against pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive healthcare and autonomy - also sex, age, disability, ethnicity, national origin, and age!

These victories prove that the fight at the state and local level is more critical now than ever and with your help we can continue to expand nationwide.

Our work continues beyond Election Day. Voters voted FOR abortion access in their states — and given the results of the election, they likely did so assuming their state would be safe regardless of who is in the White House. But you know what folks say about assuming 😉 and access to health care, freedoms, and safety should never be left to assumptions.

NIRH Action Fund’s work in the states is paramount to building political environments that lead to pro-reproductive freedom policies necessary to protect and expand access to care, including abortion.

Help us continue supporting in-state advocates and champions to enact pro-reproductive freedom values and policies.
