Dear John:

In this urgent era, there are many who would destroy independent media: organized crime, extremists in government, and would-be dictators.

Bad actors can spend anywhere between a few hundred thousand to several million dollars targeting a single journalist or outlet who exposes the truth. We have limited funding and capability to match those resources.

OCCRP is launching the “Don’t Let Them Kill the Story” ([link removed]) campaign to help those who risk everything to report the truth. We are building a security fund to protect journalists.

OCCRP takes a systematic, “360-degree” approach to protect journalists. Editor in Chief Miranda Patrucic explains how OCCRP handles some of the challenges.

OCCRP protects the lives of our reporters and their sources. Our security team now handles nearly 300 incidents a year, including surveillance, harassment, intimidation, and government crackdowns. But we can’t do it alone.

Together, we can defend reporters from harm and protect their right to uncover the truth.

Don’t let them kill the story.
