In a first-person essay, Evon Walters, the Community College of Allegheny County’s vice president of strategic initiatives and community engagement, shares how he moved from Jamaica to Massachusetts as a teen at his parent’s urging. He was in a state of shock until a professor guided him toward grad school. Now he works at CCAC, with many partners, to create moments like that for young people around Pittsburgh ([link removed]) .
Also, this week, PublicSource shared a handful of stories about the planned $740-million Esplanade project in Pittsburgh's Chateau neighborhood, which would include housing, retail and other attractions such as a Ferris Wheel.
The project has prompted strife ([link removed]) among residents in the nearby, majority-Black Manchester neighborhood. It was cleared on Tuesday by the City Planning Commission ([link removed]) , though each of the project's seven buildings will need unique approvals. Then, on Thursday, the Urban Redevelopment Authority approved two North Side neighborhoods as part of a Transit Revitalization Investment District ([link removed]) , which stipulates that a certain percentage of new real estate tax revenue will be reinvested into the community.
