In a first-person essay, Evon Walters, the Community College of Allegheny County’s vice president of strategic initiatives and community engagement, shares how he moved from Jamaica to Massachusetts as a teen at his parent’s urging. He was in a state of shock until a professor guided him toward grad school. Now he works at CCAC, with many partners, to create moments like that for young people around Pittsburgh.

Also, this week, PublicSource shared a handful of stories about the planned $740-million Esplanade project in Pittsburgh's Chateau neighborhood, which would include housing, retail and other attractions such as a Ferris Wheel.

The project has prompted strife among residents in the nearby, majority-Black Manchester neighborhood. It was cleared on Tuesday by the City Planning Commission, though each of the project's seven buildings will need unique approvals. Then, on Thursday, the Urban Redevelopment Authority approved two North Side neighborhoods as part of a Transit Revitalization Investment District, which stipulates that a certain percentage of new real estate tax revenue will be reinvested into the community.
