2024
“Trump flipped these Texas counties to help propel him to victory,” Houston Chronicle's Matt Zdun, Leila Darwiche and Janie Haseman — “Voters across the country swung to the right in the 2024 presidential race, propelling [ [link removed] ] Donald Trump to victory.. He flipped more than 60 counties from blue to red this election cycle compared to 2020 and did better this time around in 90% of the counties where at least 95% of the vote has been tallied.
In Texas, 239 of the state’s 254 counties shifted right, a Houston Chronicle analysis of Associated Press voting data shows. Ten of the counties that Biden won in 2020 went to Trump this year, including Williamson and Tarrant Counties — the two most competitive counties in the state in 2020 — and a host of counties along Texas’s southern border.
Trump won the state by six percentage points, or about 631,000 votes in 2020. He defeated Harris by 14 points this year with a margin of about 938,000 more votes overall, according to the AP tally.
Harris did not outperform Biden in any of the 22 counties where he won four years ago.
The colors on the map show change from 2020.
Counties along Texas’s southern border have seen some of the starkest political change over time.
For example, Starr County, a county of about 66,000 people in the Rio Grande Valley, has voted for Democrats in every presidential election since 1896 [ [link removed] ], the longest voting streak in the country. It voted for President Barack Obama over Republican Mitt Romney by 73 points in 2012, which was the largest Democratic victory of any county in the state that year. That blue edge shrank over the following eight years. In 2020, the county handed Biden the victory over Trump by only five points.
This year, however, the county bucked its more than 100-year voting history, choosing Trump over Harris by a whopping 16-point margin. Neighboring counties saw similar trends.
Williamson County in the Austin metro area and Tarrant County in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area handed Trump slight victories over Harris this year: three points and five points, respectively.
Both counties were solidly red in 2012, with over two-digit margins. In subsequent elections, the margins appeared to be getting less red before the counties both flipped in 2020. But they didn’t stay blue for long, returning to their red roots in this presidential election.
The president isn’t chosen by who wins counties or towns. In most cases, electoral votes are assigned based on the popular vote statewide. However, local numbers and trends can help us understand how a candidate claimed victory in a state.
Nationally, Harris failed to build on Joe Biden’s margins even in blue counties. In counties (or towns, for Connecticut) where she won, her victory was slimmer than Biden’s 2020 win by an average of about 5,500 votes. That added up to a loss of 2.5 million votes in blue counties alone.
Trump, on the other hand, saw stronger vote margins this year in counties he won in 2020. He received an extra 600 votes on average in these areas, collecting 1.6 million more votes there overall.
Texas saw this trend play out as well, with Harris gaining more ground in only six of the state’s 254 counties." Houston Chronicle [ [link removed] ] ($)
