For nearly a decade, Israel has but pressure on independent journalism. This pressure increased after October 7, 2023, putting a spotlight on serious press freedom violations by the Israeli authorities. By the end of October 2024, at least 134 journalists and media workers had been killed in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon since the outbreak of hostilities last October.
To protect press freedom in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, the US and other democratic governments should immediately arrange for swift, transparent, and independent investigations into all killings of journalists in the conflict zone.

Suzanne Nossel Selected as Next Freedom House President and CEO
Following a nationwide search, Suzanne Nossel has been selected to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer of Freedom House. Her service in international human rights organizations includes 11 years as Chief Executive Officer of PEN America, Chief Operating Officer at Human Rights Watch and Executive Director of Amnesty International USA. She will begin her tenure in 2025.
