For nearly a decade, Freedom House’s Freedom in the World report has noted state pressure on independent journalism in Israel. This pressure increased after the Hamas-led terrorist attack on October 7, 2023.
The number of journalists killed since that attack is appalling. By the end of October 2024, at least 134 journalists and media workers had been killed in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.
To protect press freedom, the US and other democratic governments should immediately arrange for swift, transparent, and independent investigations into all killings of journalists in the conflict zone.

Freedom House Announces New President and CEO
|
Following a nationwide search, Suzanne Nossel has been selected to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer of Freedom House. Her service in international human rights organizations includes 11 years as Chief Executive Officer of PEN America, Chief Operating Officer at Human Rights Watch and Executive Director of Amnesty International USA. She will begin her tenure in 2025.
