Hi John,
Donald Trump is the next President of the USA. [1] His re-election could undermine the global fight against the climate crisis at the worst possible time.
I don’t know about you, I’m pretty worried. But we have a plan to keep climate action on target.
While you or I don’t get a say in who sits in the White House, we do have power and agency over who sits in Downing Street. So here’s what we do next.
We’re going to put pressure on Keir Starmer to be bold. Together we’re going to demand that the Prime Minister stands firm on his climate promises and uses his huge majority in Parliament to force Big Oil companies to stop drilling for new climate wrecking oil and gas and to start paying billions of pounds of damages for the climate crisis they have caused.
Can you sign our urgent petition calling on the Prime Minister to reign in big polluters like Shell and BP at this crucial moment in history?
Yes, I’ll sign: [link removed]
Donald Trump’s victory was built on the back of misinformation, climate-denial and multimillion-dollar donations from Big Oil companies. [2]Trump has pledged to shred environmental regulations, unleash a “drill, baby, drill” wave of new oil and gas projects and is expected to immediately withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, at the very moment when international cooperation is needed to tackle the climate crisis. [3]
The world’s leaders will be meeting at global climate talks next week, butBig Oil lobbyists will be at the talks in record numbers and they will be licking their lips at Trump’s pro-oil, anti-climate agenda. [4] If we’re not careful Big Oil will try to use Trump’s victory to push other world leaders to water down international agreements, stall climate action and get off the hook paying billions of pounds worth of climate damages.
Now more than ever we need our Prime Minister to stand up and be counted on the global stage. We need him to remember the bold climate mandate he was elected on this summer, and that the UK public strongly supports making corporate polluters pay for climate impacts. [5]
So here’s the plan: we have 7 days to make our petition as big as possible so we can show the Prime Minister that the public expects him to hold Big Oil companies to account at these important climate crunch talks. Time is ticking - please can you add your name now?
Yes, I’ll add my name: [link removed]
The reelection of a climate denier is a crushing blow, but he is only one person and together we are powerful. We’re a global movement fighting for people, planet and our future and we refuse to fall silent in the face of adversity. Our strength comes from our collective voice and it’s people power that will convince the government to hold the big oil giants driving the climate crisis to account.
At a time when climate action is under threat and the consequences of inaction fall hardest upon the world’s poorest, it is crucial that the UK government stands up and shows leadership. So thank you for taking action to demand the Prime Minister reigns in Big Polluters - your voice matters and counts.
In solidarity,
