Donald Trump’s victory was built on the back of misinformation, climate-denial and multimillion-dollar donations from Big Oil companies. [2] Trump has pledged to shred environmental regulations, unleash a “drill, baby, drill” wave of new oil and gas projects and is expected to immediately withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, at the very moment when international cooperation is needed to tackle the climate crisis. [3]
The world’s leaders will be meeting at global climate talks next week, but Big Oil lobbyists will be at the talks in record numbers and they will be licking their lips at Trump’s pro-oil, anti-climate agenda. [4] If we’re not careful Big Oil will try to use Trump’s victory to push other world leaders to water down international agreements, stall climate action and get off the hook paying billions of pounds worth of climate damages.
Now more than ever we need our Prime Minister to stand up and be counted on the global stage. We need him to remember the bold climate mandate he was elected on this summer, and that the UK public strongly supports making corporate polluters pay for climate impacts. [5]
So here’s the plan: we have 7 days to make our petition as big as possible so we can show the Prime Minister that the public expects him to hold Big Oil companies to account at these important climate crunch talks. Time is ticking - please can you add your name now?
