** Solving a housing crisis
------------------------------------------------------------
We need to ask ourselves: are we going to be the first generation in the history of Utah that makes life worse for our kids and grandkids, or are we going to be the problem solvers?
Utah is actively addressing the national housing crisis with a new initiative aimed at bringing starter homes back to the state. In December 2023, we announced a commitment to increase homeownership opportunities, and Jed Nilson, president of Nilson Homes, embraced this challenge. Together with state and local officials, he has initiated the construction of single-family, detached starter homes in Weber County’s JDC Ranch Community, with plans for up to 275 households. These affordable homes, priced under $400,000 and designed for first-time buyers, first responders, military members, and teachers, will help many Utahns achieve their dream of homeownership.
This initiative reflects a shared vision and commitment to the people of Utah. By leveraging HB 572 funding for low-interest financing, we are setting a precedent for future builders to follow. While 275 homes may seem like a small step in addressing our housing needs, this project embodies innovation, vision, and hope. Together, we are not just building houses; we are creating opportunities for families to build lives and futures in their communities.
I believe we can solve the most difficult problems and continue to make the American Dream—the Utah dream—available for the next generation.
** Utah’s Spirit of Service
------------------------------------------------------------
This week we hosted the third annual Governor’s Spirit of Service Awards!
Utah truly leads the nation in giving service, and each of you embodies the spirit of generosity that thrives in our state. Giving back and hands-on service are core values of our administration and a key part of who we are. We aimed to recognize those making a difference through acts of service, and after reviewing hundreds of nominations, four individuals and three organizations stood out. Congratulations again! ** Renewable Diesel
------------------------------------------------------------
Rio Tinto Kennecott has been an integral part of Utah since the Bingham Canyon Mine opened in 1903. Today, it remains a cornerstone of the community, contributing approximately $1.6 billion annually to the state’s economy and investing $2.2 million each year in community projects. Kennecott is also committed to environmental stewardship, having voluntarily shut down its coal-powered plant in 2019, built a solar panel array, and begun testing battery electric vehicles. Their latest initiative to transition to renewable diesel is expected to reduce carbon emissions by about 65%, significantly improving air quality in Salt Lake County.
This shift to renewable diesel exemplifies Kennecott’s leadership and proactive approach to sustainability. Their efforts contribute to a 47% reduction in industrial emissions since 1995 and support Utah's clean energy future by providing essential copper materials. As governor, I applaud Kennecott for setting a powerful example of how industry can innovate responsibly, ensuring that Utah remains a thriving, healthy place for generations to come. Grateful to join Rio Tinto for their announcement of replacing their entire fossil diesel consumption with renewable diesel this week.
** Learning More About AI
------------------------------------------------------------
Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson recently spoke at a UVU forum on election security where students presented their research on the impact of AI and deep fakes on elections. It was a great opportunity to discuss the unique features that make Utah's election system secure, and what we need to be aware of going forward. We are proud of the incredible work being done at UVU to promote election integrity and look forward to continued collaboration in the future.
** Honoring the first All-Women Town Council
------------------------------------------------------------
Lt. Gov. Henderson was honored to attend the dedication of the All Women Town Council Monument in Kanab. Despite facing opposition and ridicule, the women, led by Mayor Mary Chamberlain, implemented ordinances addressing stray animals, liquor, and Sabbath activities, and undertook infrastructure projects like bridge and dike construction. Though their term was challenging, they left a lasting impact on the town. The monument is a testament of the strength, resilience, and leadership of them and every Utah woman.
