Solving a housing crisis
We need to ask ourselves: are we going to be the first generation in the history of Utah that makes life worse for our kids and grandkids, or are we going to be the problem solvers?
Utah is actively addressing the national housing crisis with a new initiative aimed at bringing starter homes back to the state. In December 2023, we announced a commitment to increase homeownership opportunities, and Jed Nilson, president of Nilson Homes, embraced this challenge. Together with state and local officials, he has initiated the construction of single-family, detached starter homes in Weber County’s JDC Ranch Community, with plans for up to 275 households. These affordable homes, priced under $400,000 and designed for first-time buyers, first responders, military members, and teachers, will help many Utahns achieve their dream of homeownership.
This initiative reflects a shared vision and commitment to the people of Utah. By leveraging HB 572 funding for low-interest financing, we are setting a precedent for future builders to follow. While 275 homes may seem like a small step in addressing our housing needs, this project embodies innovation, vision, and hope. Together, we are not just building houses; we are creating opportunities for families to build lives and futures in their communities.
I believe we can solve the most difficult problems and continue to make the American Dream—the Utah dream—available for the next generation.
