Recent Media Placements and Work With the United Nations
[[link removed]]
Last month, the Communications team participated in the United Nations Summit of the Future [[link removed]] , distributing a flier on behalf of Population Connection, Population Matters, and Population Media Center. As a result of our two oral statements and three rounds of comments on drafts of the document leading up to the Summit, the final Pact for the Future [[link removed]] includes:
Commitment 20: Strengthen cooperation among States in their response to demographic trends and realities, such as rapid population growth, declining birth rates, and ageing populations, as well as in addressing the interlinkages between population issues and development across all regions, taking into account the needs and interests of present and future generations, including children and youth, and the substantial contributions of older persons to sustainable development efforts.
We also submitted a joint written statement for the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women [[link removed].] , again working with staff from Population Matters and Population Media Center.
Additionally, we landed two prominent media placements in recent weeks. VP for Communications Marian Starkey's thoughtful op-ed (submitted on behalf of our sister organization, Population Connection Action Fund) was published in Ms. Magazine at the end of September:
Almost 100 Percent of U.S. Women Use Contraception—So Why Doesn’t Birth Control Have More Republican Support? [[link removed]]
Then, earlier this month, Communications Manager Olivia Nater penned a response to a recent New York Times Article:
Letters: Hurricanes, Climate Change and the 2024 Election [[link removed]]

PopEd's Fall Theme: US History
[[link removed]]
During the first quarter of the school year, our Population Education theme was the history of U.S. demographic trends. Throughout the months of September and October, we provided educators with resources that explore all the ways those trends have intersected with society, culture, and the environment over the years.
This content is most relevant for those teaching U.S. History, but also relevant for U.S. government, Geography, or general social studies classes. Go to our PopEd website to see the resources available around this timely theme!

Join the Last Page Turners Meeting of the Year!
In this 2024 publication, wildlife biologist Rebecca Kormos interviews women dedicated to combating the climate crisis, illustrating how empowering women can significantly alter our path from catastrophic environmental degradation.
We're particularly excited about the chapter highlighting the journey of one of our Global Partners [[link removed]] , Colombia-based Women for Conservation (W4C). [[link removed]] Founded by mother-daughter duo Sara Inés Lara and Isabella Cortes Lara, W4C provides opportunities for women to build sustainable livelihoods through nature conservation programs, workshops, and improved access to family planning services.
You are invited to join us next Thursday, November 7 th , at 4 pm ET/1 pm PT. We look forward to diving into this book discussion and sharing insights with each other!
