Celebrating Lights on Afterschool Week with community partners

Dear friends and partners,

The November election is less than two weeks away, and there are a number of important decisions for voters to make, including on the local level. This week, the LAUSD Board voted to endorse three measures that will modernize schools and mitigate the impacts of climate change in our communities. Learn more about one of them, Measure US, here ([link removed]) —and no matter how you vote, I encourage you to make a plan and make your voice heard!

At the same meeting, we discussed how the District is closing the achievement gap—with LAUSD seeing the largest increase from 2022 to 2023 on the Smarter Balanced Assessment test in comparison with other districts across the state, and seeing gains across almost every sub-group. I also celebrated “Lights on Afterschool” Week to recognize the importance of enrichment, joy, and social-emotional learning as part of our students’ holistic education.

From the classroom, to the playground, and beyond, our work continues to ensure every child in Los Angeles has the opportunity to learn, thrive, and reach their full potential.

Over the past few weeks, my team and I have been thrilled to recognize Digital Citizenship Week at Reseda HS, meet with our partners at Wise Readers to Leaders, join Region North's Principal meeting, inspire female athletes with the Rams and Beyond the Bell at Sutter MS, hold our first Youth Advisory Council meeting of the year at Uni HS, plant trees at Lanai ES, open the new student garden at Cowan ES, see student performances at Loyola Village ES, congratulate program graduates at West Valley Occupational Center, visit classrooms at Magnolia Science, and check out the new cool coat yard at CHIME Charter.
In the Spotlight: Lokrantz teacher recognized for going above and beyond
Priscilla Arco has taught grades 11 and twelve at Lokrantz Special Education Center in Reseda for the past six years, and this year she received the 31st District PTA Teacher of the Year Award! Ms. Arco helps her students overcome any obstacles with her ability to collaborate and her focused determination. She keeps her classes engaging and fun with many different teaching tools like touch projection boards, interactive apps, media and music, dance, and more, so that her students can interact with the lesson for a meaningful, unique, and individual experience. When she's not teaching, Ms. Arco is an avid marathon runner and loves spending time outdoors.
