Dear Friend of the Journal,
The 2024 Presidential campaign season has been chaotic to say the least. As we draw close to November 5 and the end of the Biden administration, I’ve been pondering on what it means for the work we do at the Journal. But the bottom line is, regardless of who takes office, the fight to protect our planet must go on. The stakes on that front are getting higher by the day.
Which means the need for sharp, in-depth journalism that keeps readers informed about critical climate and environmental issues has never been greater. No matter where the chips fall on Election Day, we will continue to expose the abuses of the powerful and celebrate the power of individuals making a difference in this world controlled by multinational corporations and undemocratic institutions. And to keep at it, we need your support.
When you support Earth Island Journal, you help us continue to tell the stories of grassroots movements and social justice activists showing politicians that it is time for them to follow us.

Here’s how your support has major impact:
Showcasing the Grassroots: As a Journal reader, you know that one of the most effective weapons against powerful interests is the strength of community. Our reporting brings grassroots, community movements to the forefront for other activists to learn and draw inspiration from.
Countering Corporate Spin: In mainstream media, the voices of scientists and other subject matter experts usually get drowned out by corporate PR machines. We publish stories grounded in facts, not fed by press releases.
Empowering Marginalized Voices: Environmental issues are economic and social justice issues as well. The Journal works hard to share perspectives from a wide variety of people and backgrounds, especially from the communities most impacted by climate disruption and environmental destruction.
The fight against the climate crisis won’t end on November 5. No matter who wins, well-funded, corporate forces will continue their attacks on the environmental protections our communities need to thrive.
The Journal is driven by mission, not money, but producing stories that center voices that might otherwise go unheard and speak truth to power does require financial backing. We get that backing from you, not corporations. You help us retain our independence and moral clarity.
