WG Economy: Three Factors That Will Impact Legislative Strategies In 2025
WG Economy | David Winston
October 9, 2024
We are one month out from the election, and regardless of the outcome,
Congress will immediately face a series of big ticket legislative items:
end of year spending bills, a January debt ceiling, expiration of 2025
provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, expiration of ACA subsidies and
more. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was Trump's signature legislative
achievement, and the expiration of the individual provisions is heavily
tied to the election outcome.
We are potentially headed for another divided government situation. Even if
Trump wins, there are no guarantees about which tax provisions will be
renewed. This is not the same Congress as it was in 2017, and the dynamics
are likely to be different than they were in the initial passage.

WG Discussion Points: A Civil Debate?
Now That's An October Surprise

Roll Call column [3]A Civil Debate? Now That's An October Surprise.
A civil debate? Now that's an October Surprise
Policy differences were the star of the Vance-Walz faceoff
Something weird happened in last night's high-stakes vice presidential
debate. The country expected another unpleasant rhetorical rumble, but
instead saw two political candidates engage in a civil discourse focused,
for the most part, on policy.
In the weeks leading up to the VP debate, media stories anticipated the
kind of personal attacks that characterized the earlier debate between Vice
President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. It would likely
be, the pundits thought, one gotcha moment after another, a rehash of every
statement that could possibly be used to damage their opponent and make the
electorate more unfavorable toward them. In other words, it would be one
more "it's not about me' it's about thee" debate that voters have come to
expect from political candidates today.
While there were certainly serious policy disagreements between JD Vance
and Tim Walz, there were also moments of agreement, which both candidates
verbally acknowledged. In the end, the debate seems to have resulted in an
extremely unusual outcome. Both candidates walked off the stage last night
having upped their popularity with the electorate.

Last Friday, Chairman David Avella and Fox News Contributor Richard Fowler
joined Mike Emanuel on Fox News Channel's America Reports to discuss
comparisons between the Trump and Harris campaigns. The discussion followed
a rally in Georgia last week
where Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance spoke to an energized crowd.
