Groups ask Georgia to extend voter registration after hurricane
* Georgia nonprofit groups filed ([link removed]) a lawsuit asking the state to extend its voter registration deadline to Oct. 14 following the devastation of Hurricane Helene. The deadline to register in Georgia was yesterday, Oct. 7.
* After the plaintiffs asked ([link removed]) for an “expedited procedure to resolve this matter on an emergency basis,” a federal district court in Atlanta scheduled a hearing in the case for tomorrow at 3:45 p.m.

Lawsuit filed against Virginia governor over voter purge program
* Voting rights organizations filed ([link removed]) a lawsuit arguing that a voter purge program initiated by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) targeting alleged noncitizens has illegally removed U.S. citizens from the rolls and violates federal law.
* The groups argued that because the purge program was announced 90 days before the election, the removal of every voter from the rolls violates the National ([link removed]) [link removed] Registration Act ([link removed]) — which mandates that no voter cancellation can occur within 90 days of an election.

The latest on the state of voting in New York
* A New York judge struck down ([link removed]) a new state law that moved certain local elections to even-numbered years to align with federal elections and boost turnout. The court ruled in favor of Republicans and said the law violates the state constitution.
* At least 20 colleges in New York don’t ([link removed]) have a polling place, according to analysis from the New York Public Interest Research Group, likely violating state law that requires most colleges to have on-campus voting sites.

How a simple voting mistake could turn into heated legal battle
* If you make a mistake on your mail-in ballot, will your vote still count? The answer depends on the state — and a series of ongoing lawsuits. Read here ([link removed]) to learn how the cases are currently being sorted out in court and how you can prevent any mishaps.
* Common ballot errors include forgetting to write the date on a mail-in ballot’s outer envelope, not submitting a mail-in ballot with a specific envelope or returning a ballot to the wrong county or precinct.
