Groups ask Georgia to extend voter registration after hurricane

• Georgia nonprofit groups filed a lawsuit asking the state to extend its voter registration deadline to Oct. 14 following the devastation of Hurricane Helene. The deadline to register in Georgia was yesterday, Oct. 7.

  
  

• After the plaintiffs asked for an “expedited procedure to resolve this matter on an emergency basis,” a federal district court in Atlanta scheduled a hearing in the case for tomorrow at 3:45 p.m.

Lawsuit filed against Virginia governor over voter purge program

• Voting rights organizations filed a lawsuit arguing that a voter purge program initiated by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) targeting alleged noncitizens has illegally removed U.S. citizens from the rolls and violates federal law.

  
  

• The groups argued that because the purge program was announced 90 days before the election, the removal of every voter from the rolls violates the National Voter Registration Act — which mandates that no voter cancellation can occur within 90 days of an election.

• A New York judge struck down a new state law that moved certain local elections to even-numbered years to align with federal elections and boost turnout. The court ruled in favor of Republicans and said the law violates the state constitution.
