Dear John,
A hallmark of our work at Futures Without Violence has been partnerships with domestic violence advocates, survivors – and the many professionals who are dedicated to preventing and responding to violence and abuse.
Working together, we have made enormous progress. Domestic violence has come out of the shadows, with a network of advocates and professionals who strive every day to prevent and recognize abuse and support survivors. That work has saved lives. Reducing domestic violence by more than 60 percent has been one of our nation’s biggest public health success stories.
About 40% of women and 25% of men experienced violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime, according to the CDC – and those numbers are even higher among LGBTQ populations and Black, American Indian and Alaska Native women.
Healthcare providers have one of the most important roles to play in early intervention and prevention, because many people seek care for themselves or their children at some point in their lives.
