Dear John,

A hallmark of our work at Futures Without Violence has been partnerships with domestic violence advocates, survivors – and the many professionals who are dedicated to preventing and responding to violence and abuse.

Working together, we have made enormous progress. Domestic violence has come out of the shadows, with a network of advocates and professionals who strive every day to prevent and recognize abuse and support survivors. That work has saved lives. Reducing domestic violence by more than 60 percent has been one of our nation’s biggest public health success stories.

And yet, more than 10 million people, the vast majority of them women, are harmed by domestic violence every year. We know we still have work to do.

Healthcare providers have one of the most important roles to play in early intervention and prevention, because many people seek care for themselves or their children at some point in their lives.

With our National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence, FUTURES’ health team leads a national health initiative to advance quality and equitable healthcare for survivors and promote violence prevention. We recently partnered with the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma and Mental Health and the National Domestic Violence Hotline to produce the publication "Innovation Spotlight: Increasing Survivors Access to Health and Behavioral Health Services."

The Health Resource Center also has two upcoming opportunities of note:

  • Register for our Oct. 9 webinar: Supporting IPV Survivors through Harm Reduction on Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day
  • And registration will soon open for the FUTURES’ Conference on Health, now in its 25th year, which will be held in person September 2025. It’s the largest gathering of health professionals, advocates, survivors, researchers, and policy makers who work at the intersection of domestic violence.

In addition, no matter your role – as an employer, judge, educator, parent or advocate – FUTURES offers resources and training at every level to learn how to recognize the signs of abuse, support survivors, and prevent future harm. We’ve compiled our best resources for you on our website here.

And, if you or someone you love needs help, we urge you to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

Thank you for the work you do in preventing and addressing domestic violence and thank you for supporting ours. A future without violence is possible if we work together.

Regards,
Lisa James
