Welcome to the September issue of COPE Digest.
** NEW CASES FROM THE COPE FORUM

Two new cases were brought to the COPE Forum in September for discussion and advice from COPE Members:
* Authorship when data sets are reused as secondary data ([link removed])
A journal is considering how to handle authorship of articles where medical data are subsequently used by a different research team as secondary data sets to explore the same or new research questions.
* Questionable journal duplicating the name of a COPE member ([link removed])
An editorial board member of the journal reported to the editorial office after discovering a submission invitation in their mailbox. The invitation came from a journal with the same name but a different ISSN.
Advice on individual cases is not formal COPE guidance.

In 2024 generative AI, more cross-publisher collaboration, improved detection tools, and renewed attention to plagiarism are redefining the problem of plagiarism and how to respond to it.

COPE Council Members Jiayi Xi and Jason Hu will be leading a Chinese-language version of our Introduction to Publication Ethics workshop. The workshop takes place on Tuesday 8 October, 16:00-17:30 CST / UTC+8.
This workshop is an introduction to the principles of publication ethics and how to use guidance and tools to embed publication ethics in a journal's daily practice.

This article suggests adopting some easy-to-use technological solutions to help researchers, publishers and referees to clean things up.
