Imagine being forced to isolate with your abuser. Support services are struggling, first responders have shifted priorities, and domestic violence shelters are full or have closed. You feel trapped and have nowhere to turn.

We know the impact of COVID-19 will be profound—but for women and girls the consequences will be unlike any we've seen before.

According to the UN, the COVID-19 pandemic has created a global crisis. From gender-based violence, to economic hardship, to school closures—the social and economic impact on women and girls will be devastating.

We know that education is the key to social and economic empowerment. Which is why we are committed to investing in the dreams of women and girls worldwide through our Dream Programs—but we won't be able to do it alone.

What you need to know:

> Gender-based violence is increasing exponentially. Many women are being forced to ‘lockdown’ at home with their abusers.

> Alongside the increase of violence against women, exposure to COVID-19 is being used as a threat; abusers are exploiting the inability of women to call for help or escape.

> Economic impacts are felt especially by women and girls who are generally earning less, saving less, and holding insecure jobs or living close to poverty.

> School closures could lead to millions of more girls dropping out of school before they complete their education, especially those living in poverty, girls with disabilities or living in isolated locations.
