Dear Friend,
An issue I hear about often when I talk with Coloradans is their concern about housing affordability. And people tell me regularly that they are concerned that they cannot afford to live near where they work.
That’s why this summer, I joined Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan to hear from community members about issues like rent increases and unfair practices by corporate landlords.
I heard disturbing stories and concerns about surprise “junk” fees, collusion among corporate landlords, and deceptive practices – all of which are taking money out of renters’ pockets.
At the meeting, I promised to crack down on abusive practices and we are doing just that.

This year, I took action against a major property management company which was charging “junk fees”–that is, undisclosed and made-up fees like a “moving out fee”–that unknowing tenants pay. And friend, we got tenants their money back.
Now, other landlords are on notice that these fees are illegal – and that I’ll fight to get money back to tenants.
Recently, I filed a lawsuit to stop collusion between landlords who were illegally using a software program provided by Realpage, a company that bragged that their product could help landlords collude rather than compete. You can read about that lawsuit here [[link removed]] .
Finally, I filed a brief to make it clear that lying to tenants is illegal, like putting terms into leases that are unenforceable. Landlords are now on notice that such actions and dishonesty to tenants won’t be tolerated.
If you know of deceptive, unfair, or abusive practices happening against renters, please let us know at StopFraudColorado.gov. [StopFraudColorado.gov.]
Thanks for your support in doing this important work.
Phil
