There’s nothing sustainable about the destruction of the Mashco Piro forest and lives. Fight logging in their territory today.
Dear Jack,
Just three months ago, Survival International issued an urgent call to protect the lands of the uncontacted Mashco Piro tribe in Peru from loggers.
We counted on you – and you delivered. You’ve sent more than 15,000 emails to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) – which certifies logging companies as “ethical” – urging it to decertify Canales Tahuamanu, one of the companies operating in Mashco Piro territory and threatening their lives.
And your pressure is working. On 30 August, the FSC suspended the company’s certification. Their operations have not only been destroying the tribe’s forest, but potentially exposing them to deadly Western diseases. You’ve reminded the world that timber extracted from uncontacted tribes’ lands can’t be called ethical.
The suspension is an important first step in acknowledging the problem, and it sends a powerful message to the Peruvian government. But more needs to be done: FSC must cancel the certification for good, and the government needs to protect all the Mashco Piro’s territory.
This week the FSC celebrates Forest Week, spotlighting the importance of sustainable forest management. But there’s nothing sustainable about the destruction of the Mashco Piro’s forest and lives.
Let’s take the fight one step further. Help us stop the logging – for good – by:
Demanding that the Peruvian government expand the protected area to include all Mashco Piro land and revoke all logging licenses inside it.
Asking the FSC to cancel the company’s certification for good. Boycott this #FSCForestWeek by photographing an FSC-certified product (e.g. Milk cartons, paper tags, boxes, etc.) and sharing it on social media tagging @FSC and using #FSCForestWeek. We've made a template for Instagram and a tweet for X below.

The Mashco Piro might not have much time. Please act now.
