Dear Jack, Just three months ago, Survival International issued an urgent call to protect the lands of the uncontacted Mashco Piro tribe in Peru from loggers. We counted on you – and you delivered. You’ve sent more than 15,000 emails to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) – which certifies logging companies as “ethical” – urging it to decertify Canales Tahuamanu, one of the companies operating in Mashco Piro territory and threatening their lives. And your pressure is working. On 30 August, the FSC suspended the company’s certification. Their operations have not only been destroying the tribe’s forest, but potentially exposing them to deadly Western diseases. You’ve reminded the world that timber extracted from uncontacted tribes’ lands can’t be called ethical.
