Millions of hardworking Americans are struggling to afford the rising cost of housing nationwide. Rapidly increasing rent prices are forcing families out of their homes, destabilizing communities, and widening the gap between housing costs and wages.

In Michigan, rental rates have increased by over 45% since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Millions of families across the country report spending over half their income on rent. Corporate landlords are reporting record profits while too many Americans struggle to keep a roof over their heads.

Despite this crisis, 30 states have laws that prevent local governments from enacting rent control, leaving renters vulnerable to sudden, steep increases that can upend their lives.

National rent control legislation would provide millions of renters with immediate relief and housing security — in the long run, it would also help alleviate the need for more affordable housing options.

This legislation must include a nationwide cap on annual rent increases, removal of state-level bans on local rent control measures, creation of a national rent price database, and incentives for the construction of new affordable housing units.
