In Michigan, rental rates have increased by over 45% since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Millions of families across the country report spending over half their income on rent. Corporate landlords are reporting record profits while too many Americans struggle to keep a roof over their heads.
Despite this crisis, 30 states have laws that prevent local governments from enacting rent control, leaving renters vulnerable to sudden, steep increases that can upend their lives.
