** Durán: A Window into Ecuador’s Organized Crime Explosion

On September 26, InSight Crime will host a virtual panel discussing the findings of our investigation, “Durán: A Window into Ecuador’s Organized Crime Explosion,” which will be published the same morning.

Durán, one of the country’s most violent municipalities in 2023, serves as a window through which to analyze the collapse of Ecuador’s security situation. During the panel, we will unpack the complex criminal landscape of Durán, where land trafficking and corruption in the municipal government prove equally important to the oft-discussed drug trafficking.

InSight Crime co-director Steven Dudley will discuss the main findings of the report, including how Durán arrived at its current state, how the city’s criminal groups wield political, economic, and social power, and how they use violence. Leonardo Gómez Ponce, an Ecuadorian journalist, will talk about alias “Washo,” the leader and regulator of Durán’s underworld before his death in 2023. Alina Manrique, an Ecuadorian journalist, will discuss alias “Diablo,” a longtime Latin Kings gang leader who has accumulated significant influence in Durán. The event will be moderated by Katherine Herrera, an Ecuadorian security expert with extensive experience in Durán.
